Bob Geldof, the Irish musician who organized Live Aid and Live 8, has spoken out against the upcoming Live Earth concert series, which is set to rock seven continents on July 7.
It’s a “waste of time,” he told the Holland press. “Why is Gore actually organizing them? To make us aware of the greenhouse effect? Everybody's known about that problem for years. We are all [expletive] conscious of global warming."
Geldof obviously has no idea what he’s talking about, seeing as millions of people still view global warming as a bogus concept invented by godless Liberals in hopes of creating anarchy. Forget science and logic--many people have a “see-no-evil” perspective when it comes to the environment.
Which is why, following the heightened interest in An Inconvenient Truth, Live Earth is a great way to continue reaching people and raising awareness. An expected 2 billion people will be glued to the event, so figure it this way: If only 1% of the audience actually listens to the message and not just the music, that’s 20 million people affected. Not too shabby.
That’s not to say that Live Earth, and the two multi-platform concerts before it, is without its problems. For starters, there is no dignity in celebrities flying on fume-emitting private planes to an environmentally friendly event. But to do their part, the organizers insist that they will use “on-site power generation” and other minimizers.
In an ideal world, people wouldn’t need a big, bloated rock concert featuring Madonna, Linkin Park and tons of other artists to get them to open their ears and minds. But beneath the corporate hooplah, there is a good message behind Live Earth. Let’s just hope people don’t flock in SUVS to hear it.
No!
-- J.P. Gorman
Some time back, prior to appearing before Congress, Al Gore sent out an e-mail petition asking Americans to stand behind him in the fight against global warming, to show the government how many people seriously care about this issue. Touched by his earnestness, I signed up. Periodically over the ensuing months, I’ve received updates from Gore about various issues pertaining to the cause, the announcement of Live Earth among them.
Last week, I received an advertisement for his new book, an anti-Bush diatribe unrelated to global warming, with a link to where I could purchase an advance copy. He sounded just as earnest in this e-mail as in the previous ones, but, for some reason, I can’t back this second cause.
Universally increased consciousness concerning global warming has been a refreshing product of Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth. It’s nice to know that people are still capable of banding together with the hope of changing the world.
The performers and sponsors involved with Live Earth are very excited, righteous in fact, determined to stop this global climate crisis once and for all by playing music in enormous stadiums around the globe under corporate logos between commercial breaks.
There’s one thing we can’t forget in all of this: Corporations don’t do anything they don’t think will make them a lot of money, and celebrities generally don’t do anything that won’t increase their popularity.
I know everyone’s so consumed with the cause, so committed to the effort, but that cause is staving off the end of the world, and that effort is a hyper-commercialized worldwide concert.
Forgive my skepticism, but we’ve since discovered that the vast majority of Africans never saw any money raised by Live 8.
What’s so different here?
Awareness doesn’t pay for research, and we already know the score.
