Coming off an awkward performance of John Lennon’s “Working Class” hero at the ‘American Idol’ season finale (come on, my girlfriend made me watch it), our very own Green Day is now slated to release a rendition of ‘The Simpsons’ theme song to coincide with this summer’s movie release.
According to Billboard, precisely three days before the film hits theatres, Warner Bros. Records will release the Green Day single.
Fox Music will then make a digital score album available by its Web site and Extreme Music will release 25,000 pink donut cases to specialty retailers like Circuit City, Best Buy, Barnes & Noble and, not to be out done, Wal-Mart. Ah, Jesus of suburbia’s favorite hangout joints.
Jewel-cased CDs will be available too, as Fox Music President Robert Kraft says, "We really wanted to think outside of the box and 'The Simpsons Movie' was a perfect vehicle to try a new approach."
As someone who’s not a fan of musical scores or soundtracks but is still a fan of Green Day, this doesn’t look appetizing. I can honestly say I have no desire in hearing a punk rock version of ‘The Simpsons’ theme song, do you? This whole reprisal attempt to make a show that peaked 11 years ago relevant again is tiresome and, truly, is tarnishing the memory of its golden age.
Well, maybe it’s not that bad, but I’m still not interested.
