In Defense Of The Darkness
There’s been some speculation in recent weeks about a possible reformation of outrageously over-the-top glam metal band The Darkness, speculation which has been, frankly, underreported by most news outlets including this one. I talked it over with a few of my friends over drinks last night, and most people seem to be under the impression The Darkness were a shitty one hit wonder band who was arguably only famous because of one humorous video.

Look: I’m not denying the Darkness were probably too popular at one point, at least more popular than they deserved. Last I checked, Failure To Land sold some two million copies. But the Darkness fill a niche. They were/ are the best indulgent, 80s throwback hair pop rock band. I like the 80s. I like White Snake. I like Warrant. I like Winger. There’s room for nothing but a good time in this depleted and broken economy, at least on the radio.

If The Darkness aren’t your thing, fine. Don’t buy their goddamn album; don’t read this story. But there’s room for a band like The Darkness. We’re not living in 1967 anymore. Alternative and pop radio don’t have The Beatles, The Beach Boys, and The Rolling Stones. We have Switchfoot, Three Days Grace, and Puddle Of Mudd. Personally, I’d rather hear The Darkness, a band which at least has its own well-defined unique sound.

So, get back together guys. I’m not promising to attend any concerts, but I will listen with a smile, something I don’t frequently do when the radio is involved.
