Joining the long list of obnoxious bands critics love and the public merely tolerate, Jane’s Addiction will be honored by NME later this month with the semi-coveted Godlike Genius Award. The ode to a fictitious superhero will be presented on the 23rd in Los Angeles’ Goldenvoice El Ray Theater. I’ve never heard of this particular venue, but it strikes me as the type of place where one would be presented with a statue for writing “Been Caught Stealing.”
According to NME, the group was chosen because "They are exactly the sort of once-in-a-lifetime, inspirational, aspirational, no-holds-barred, genre-busting, risk-taking, pioneering group which sums up what the NME Awards is all about.” Huh. And you thought the NME Awards were simply a platform for the alternative press to jerk off to niche genres no one gives a shit about. Idiot.
Past recipients of the Godlike Genius award include New Order, Primal Scream, and the Manic Street Preachers. Tune in next year when NME editors will heap praise upon another slightly above-average band.
