She may have lost American Idol, but don’t cry for her, Argentina. Finalist Katharine McPhee is doing just fine in her career (thankyouverymuch) and her highly anticipated self-titled debut album is coming out on Jan. 31. To whip up some excitement for the cause, we’ve got a stream of her brand new single and four stunning photos to gawk at.
My thoughts? It sounds a bit generically poppy for my tastes, but that doesn’t mean the CD as a whole won’t be any good. It’s just not really the best hint of things to come.
There have been a lot of complaints lately about American Idol singers losing creative control to big studio know-it-alls (especially on their first albums), and that trend doesn’t seem to be ending anytime soon. It's not making fans too happy. But don’t worry—Clarkson was able to “breakaway” on album No. 2, and the rest can do the same. If they’re smart.
Thanks to Christy at Fanscape for the tip. Now that you’ve heard the song, check out the new pictures of the brunette beauty:

What I meant to say is that only if somehow the singer could just be left to pen the songs entirely or for the most part, and put their touches on production all would be great.. Not always true unfortunately. It also depends on the type of artist and their goals. I still suspect that Katharine did have many inputs, just short of grabbing the drums and playing all instruments.. When you invite others to an album it becomes a group process. But again, Katherine is about voice and presence and that's there regardless of what style her backing music is.
I think the song sounds pretty good and will be picking up the CD on the 30th.
It's funny how most assume that albums are ruined in the hands of producers when it's just not true. The songs/art etc are to showcase the artist and that's where experience in the industry helps most of the time. As soon as an album doesn't fit into a critics favorite tastes or genre they think it's the produers fault and only if somehow the singer could just be left to pen the songs and put their touches on production all would be great.. Not always true unfortunately.
Many artists that try this on their own, usually ruin the record on their first attempt and hence their careers. But if it makes you feel any better, Katharine most likely put many touches on the creative process since the producers would know what she likes. So this notion of "breaking away" is somewhat naive, not to mention that I didn't fully like Kelly's tastes on some songs. But she was my favorite idol and I do like many of the songs, so I have the CD's. It's just luck of the draw that determines if you or anyone else like the tunes when they hit shelfs.
Thank you for your fair analysis and write up of Katharine. Some are immediately so negative about her album after just hearing snippets. They can't know how the rest is going to sound like and by judging her without listening to the entire cd just makes it to be an unfair analysis of Kat's work. Again, thank you for not closing the door on Kat.
