Kelly Clarkson Gets Trounced By … Hannah Montana?!Author: Lexi Feinberg

Well, there’s a bit of good and bad news for Kelly Clarkson enthusiasts when it comes to the latest Billboard chart. The good news is that her risky third album, My December, which she fought like a pit bull to make her way, had a solid opening with 291,000 copies--a higher number than her first week sales of Breakaway.
The bad news is that she got bested by teenybopper queen Miley Cyrus, whose two-CD release Hannah Montana 2 was the surprise No. 1 champ of the week. That’s a “yay!” and an “ouch!” all at once. Billboard reports that Miley Cyrus, 14-year-old daughter of mullet-sporting, “Achy Breaky Heart” singer Billy Ray Cyrus, landed the top spot on the Billboard 200 with 326,000 albums sold in the U.S. This should please the Teen Beat crowd plenty, and leave the rest of us shrugging our shoulders. You can read our reviews of the top 2 CDs of the week here (Cyrus) and here (Clarkson). In other chart-related news, Bon Jovi’s Lost Highway slipped to the No. 3 spot with 125,000 units sold, the White Stripes’ Icky Thump dropped to the No. 4 spot with 88,000 and Brad Paisley’s 5th Gear slid to the No. 5 spot with 81,000. This week (happy July 4!) marks the debut of the new rockin' Velvet Revolver album. Will the supergroup be able to dethrone the current juvenile “it” girl? We’ll have the answer to that burning question early next week. |
