Welcome to Cinema Blend Music’s live, up to the minute coverage of the MTV Video Music Awards. Check back here regularly tonight for up to the minute results from the show as they happen.
From infamous kisses (Britney, Madonna, & Michael) to performance disasters (Britney again), the VMAs have earned themselves a well deserved reputation as being the one awards show on television where literally anything can happen – and often does. Did we mention Britney’s going to be there tonight?
Check back throughout the night for updated results and of course, the sort of unhinged commentary you’ve come to expect from Cinema Blend. So stay tuned!
6:16 PM: Britney opens the show looking and sounding normal. Damn! So much for the trainwreck we had so hoped for. Who's this Russell Brand guy? He looks like Weird Al on crack. He wants us to vote for Obama, but wants to have sex with Sarah Palin. He's not very funny. Jamie Foxx is presenting for Best Female Video. Britney wins! Britney wins!
6:31 PM: Demi Moore presents the Best Male award to Chris Brown. Omigod! It's the Jonas Brothers! They are sitting down playing acoustic guitars like a bunch of wise old blues cats. But wait a sec...looks like they're gonna rock out after all. The crowd is going nuts for this, especially all the little girls. The thing is, these guys aint' half bad, and its kinda cool to see a boy band that can actually rock. I'll take these guys over the whitebread R&B of Backstreet and N'Sync any day. Is Katy Perry really doing "Like A Virgin"? Guess we'll never know, cause they went to commercial not even halfway through it.
6:46 PM: Michael Phelps intros Lil' Wayne's performance with Leona Lewis and T-Pain by talking about how he warmed up in Bejing by listening to Jay Z, Eminem, and of course Lil' Wayne. Wayne reminds me a lot of Rick James. Maybe his new catch phrase should be "I'm Lil' Wayne, bitch!" Wait a minute...did Russell Brand just fuck up? I thought they already did Best Female Video. Did I just fuck up? Nope, it was Brand after all. Get your awards straight loser! Fricken Weird Al wannabe. They're doing Best Dancing in a video now. And the winner is...the Pussycat Dolls!
7:10 PM: Paramore are live from the Whiskey A Go-Go at the top of the hour. Is it my imagination, or this thing running like a well oiled machine so far time wise? Doing a remote from the Whiskey strikes me as a pretty cool idea, and reminds me of how MTV used to actually play and generally be a lot more about, you know, music. Paramore are also up for Best Rock Video, which probably means that's up next. I wonder if they'll win? Here's Slash and Shia Lebouf to do, yup, Best Rock Video. The competition is pretty stiff with Slipknot, Foo Fighters, and Linkin Park, who end up winning it.
7:20 PM: Looks like they're gonna' do Best Hip-Hop video next, and this one could be trouble. Kanye's up for the prize, and I'm guessing he won't win cause' this is pretty much Lil' Wayne's year. Kanye is also supposed to perform later on, and you know how he threw a fit when he didn't win last time. Maybe we'll get that trainwreck after all, cause so far this show is playing things pretty safe. One can only hope.
7:28 PM: Here comes Slipknot to present Best Hip-Hop video. This oughtta' shake things up a bit. I was right. It's Lil' Wayne. So far, Kanye is nowhere to be seen. But stay tuned...
7:45 PM: Okay, here we go. It's time for Christina Aguilera, and man does she look fricking hot. Christina's all dressed up in this black, sexy-ass Catwoman looking sort of outfit. Now she took the cat mask off. Man, she is still hot as hell though. The thing is, she can sing her ass off too. Not that I'd actually buy her album or anything, but I like the idea of a Barbie Doll who actually has a set of pipes to match her set of...well, you know. Now its time for Best New Artist, which is decided by public voting. Tokio Hotel wins it, in what has to be considered a bit of an upset. Best Pop Video looks to be next.
7:55 PM: Oh look, it's Paris Hilton to do the honors for Best Pop Video! Does anyone know what Paris actually does? I know for sure that I don't. Britney wins! Britney wins! I was hoping for a catfight here between the two former partygirl drinking pals, but unfortunately no dice! Damn! Were running out of time and opportunities for a trainwreck fast here. I think that big one for Video Of The Year is just about all we've got left here, so they need to shake this party up pretty quick!
8:05 PM: By the way I just thought of something I need to clarify for any East Coasters reading this. The times I'm stamping here are all West Coast times, cause' thats where I live. So yeah, it really is more like 11 P.M. where you are. So Kid Rock's onstage now. This is a guy you gotta root for. His band is great, and his "All Summer Long" mashup of Skynyrd and Warren Zevon is one of the few rock and roll success stories left for the music industry to run up the ol' flagpole. The Kid also kicks ass, both musically and when called for, literally as well. Just ask Tommy Lee. They're doing Video Of The Year next with an hour to go on the show. Kanye's performing right after that.
8:15 PM: Kobe Bryant's doing Video Of The Year now. I'm betting on Britney for the clean sweep here. Yup, Britney. The love fest is complete. Kanye's on now, so unless he performs for like 45 minutes, it looks like this party is shutting down early. Kanye lost in his category again, and nobody got hurt. Other than that, on a scale of one to ten, I'll give tonight's show about a five for performances (mainly for Christina and Kid Rock), and a zero for shock value. Maybe next year.
Thanks for joining our coverage of the 2008 VMA's, and we'll see ya' next year!
