Joining the needlessly long, unnecessary line of pointless holidays, Record Store Day is a little more than a month away, and heavy metal giants Metallica have already made their plans. Lars, James, Kirk, and Rob will spend the afternoon in Mountain View, California, signing records at the local Rasputin Music Store. I’ve never heard of this particular establishment, but if the name is any indication of store policy, hide your daughters and hemophiliac sons.
According to NME, approximately four hundred wrist bands will be shelled out, granting the lucky winners both entrance and autographs. I haven’t really been on board with much Metallica has done in the last decade and a half (except their incredible cover of Bob Seger’s “Turn The Page”), but this strikes me as a nice gesture for their fanbase, which seems to be growing increasingly disenchanted.
So, here’s to you, Metallica, pioneers behind four of metal’s greatest albums, and if it’s not too much trouble, could you maybe include a two and a half minute solo in at least half the songs? Because you know, that’s what made you worth obsessing over.
