Baseball season’s underway
Well you better get ready for a brand new day
Hey, Chicago, what do you say
The Cubs are gonna win today.
March 31st–Major League Baseball’s opening day. Baring a rain delay, my Chicago Cubs are about two hours away from embarking on the 2008/2009 season. Over the next seven months, there’ll be tears, there’ll be expressive fist pumps, and it’ll all come crashing down by September–October, if I’m lucky. I already know this. It doesn’t take a gypsy to foretell doom when the Cubbies are involved. But still I root. I park my ass in front of the television and scream like a wounded soldier at the Alamo because, well, it’s all I’ve ever known.
My grandmother still, thirty-seven years after he retired, refers to Ernie Banks as her boyfriend. My cousin has been fired twice for taking in day games while she should have been working. The Cubbies are my Jesus, and every season those Loveable Losers are strung up on the cross, a painful lesson to all those who believed. Well, I’m sick of crying away the pain. I’m done with accepting failure. 2008 is that mythical ‘next year’, we’ve all been hearing about for the last century. Bring on the unbridled optimism.
So, to help you shake off the clout and pessimism, here’s lifelong Northsider’s fanatic Steve Goodman’s “Go Cubs Go”, the most played song on my iPod. I’m not kidding...
