New Sound for Counting Crows

published: 2007-08-15 19:43:09
As a huge Counting Crows fan, all I have to say is that it’s about time they put out a new album. I was getting pretty antsy last year, but then I saw them in concert with the Goo Goo Dolls here in Toronto and that seemed to satisfy me; it was the first and only time I have seen them perform and they really did put on a great show. Since then I’ve been content with popping in August and Everything After, or even one of their various live discs, and just reminiscing about my concert experience. But as far as I’m concerned any news about the CD is good news, and it has certainly re-heightened my anticipation.

Saturday Nights, Sunday Mornings has been on the horizon for a while, but it’s been a slow process. I don’t think there is an official date yet, but we can finally expect it to hit stores sometime in November of this year. With that in mind, it is refreshing to see that frontman Adam Duritz seems to have grasped the concept of motivation. “I told everybody at the beginning of the record, it was my fault," Duritz revealed to Billboard.com. "I took off for the last few years, but there isn't any more free ride here. Everybody's ass is grass. We're (expletive) going to be a great band or we're not going to be a band." I sincerely hope this means he intends to move along at a quicker pace than the mere 4 albums they have made in their 14 year history, because I’ve always thought that these guys could be much bigger than they are. Up to this point, they have basically just meandered through their musical career, and it would be awesome to see them really take flight.

Duritz also sounds pretty excited about the content of the new album, saying that it is full of surprises. The Saturday Nights portion supposedly contains their most heavily electric songs yet, and is complimented by a more acoustic flow on the Sunday Mornings side. He claims that it is not like any of their other albums (which I would say DO sound very similar) and that it may even turn some people off. I say bring it on Adam. I love every single one of their old songs but I trust their talents and if anything, I’m looking forward to it even more now that I know it could surprise me.
