Papalpalooza: Rock for the Pope

Who says Catholicism is archaic?

Actually, the dark, murky past of the Catholic religion is a topic for a different Web site. But at least the cobwebs of tradition will be blown away for one weekend, as Pope Benedict XVI’s visit to the U.S. will be commemorated by – hallelujah – a rock concert.

A delectable array of Christian bands and other musical acts will gather Saturday to play a youth rally at St. Joseph Seminary in Yonkers, NY, in a religions experience / rock ‘n’ roll bash creatively dubbed “Papalpalooza,” Reuters reported Friday. The roster reportedly includes Third Day, Matt Maher, Salvador, tobyMac and American Idol pioneer Kelly Clarkson. The name? Right up there with "Popemobile."

In a true show of charitable devotion, all acts are performing free of charge, and even paying their own travel bills, event producer Chris Wangro said. The Pope’s festival will be suitably extravagant, covering 50 acres and boasting food, medical aid, chapel tents and even confessional areas – in case concertgoers decide to get married on a whim and feel guilty about it later. You know how kids are.

It has been well documented how destructive rock concerts can be, and history is filled with the disastrous results of unlike religions combining. Let’s hope with each band’s following in attendance, the resulting vaguely Christian cornucopia of concertgoers gets along with each other, at least for the Pope’s sake. If even one report comes through of a Frisbee lodged in a skull or a juice-drunk partier impaled on a wiffle bat, it will be one too many.
