Rage To Rock…The Republicans?
Well, not quite, but close enough.

Following their incendiary, near riot-inciting performance at this past weekend’s Lollapalozza Festival in Chicago, Rage Against The Machine have announced they will play a show at Minneapolis Target Center on Sept. 3. The date and location are significant because that is just within earshot of the Republican National Convention, which is being held in neighboring St. Paul that same week. Rage guitarist Tom Morello has also announced that he will play a union rally with Steve Earle in St. Paul on the first day of the G.O.P. convention.

As reported right here at Cinema Blend, Zach DeLa Rocha climaxed a furious set from Rage at Lollapalooza with a politically charged tirade, and a warning to Barack Obama that if he didn’t bring troops home from Iraq once he is (presumably) elected, that cities would burn to the ground.

Rage Against The Machine are of course no strangers to this sort of fiery, poltically charged rhetoric in their live shows, nor to the controversy which often follows the band in its wake. In 2000, Rage played a free show near the Democratic Convention in Los Angeles, that ended with the police dispersing the crowd with tear gas and pepper spray.

Rage Against The Machine are known nearly as much for their radical politics as they are for the rap-rock hybrid sound they helped to pioneer in the nineties on albums like The Battle Of Los Angeles. The band has never been known to shy away from causes ranging from the political to the personal, such as when they once famously chastised Los Angeles radio station KROQ (also during a Lollapalooza appearance) for censoring their lyrics, causing the station to pull the band’s music from playlists the next day.

The band has yet to comment on any specific plans for the Sept 3 show in Minneapolis.
