It’s no secret hip hop relies heavily on sampling beats, sometimes without proper permission, thus resulting in surprise lawsuits. It’s no wonder then that it’s happened yet again. Kanye West, Common, Redman and Method Man, along with their respective record labels are being sued by late Jazz artist Joe Farrell’s daughter for sampling his 1974 piece “Upon This Rock.” Yes, that was 34 years ago.
According to
Reuters Kathleen Firrantello filed a lawsuit Thursday in New York against the rappers for sampling parts of Farrell’s song, who died in 1986. Yes, that was 22 years ago. Firrantello is asking that Common’s “Chi-City,” (2007) West’s “Gone” (2005) and Method Man and Redman’s “Run 4 Cover” (1999) not be sold or performed any longer and no additional copies to be made. That means this dates back to – yes - about nine years. In addition to ceasing performances, Firrantello is also asking for $1 million in damages. Everyone touch the corner of your lip with your pinky now.
