CD Review: Slayer's Christ Illusion

By Michael Fraiman: 2006-08-09 00:00:00
CD Review: Slayer's Christ Illusion After 20+ years in the business, it’s inevitable that a band—let’s say, Slayer—will have controversy surrounding their music—let’s say, “Jihad”, a single off of their latest album entitled Christ Illusion—yet also keep an unshakeable fan-base. Slayer's tenth studio album is, in a sense, the culmination of their career: it summarizes their uninhibited controversial nature, exemplifies their tight thrash metal style, and presents a stubborn image of their musical determination. Without adding anything particularly new to the genre here, Slayer is perfecting their tried-and-true style; it won’t win over any new fans, but it’s sure to appease the old ones.

Obviously, the boys are playing their familiar old card: shock value. (Look no further than the box art featuring an amputated, zombie-like Jesus with gouged out eyes.) Yet Christ Illusion lacks a certain spirit possessed by their earlier works; it’s as if they’ve taken their controversial subject matter for granted, and used it as an excuse to mask their lack of any real substance. With lines like “I will eat your soul”, who even needs it? The album deals with heavy topical issues such as the war in Iraq, the hypocrisy of religion, and corrupt governments. But at this point such satirical, base lyrics have aged poorly and become trite. Luckily, far more poignant and soulful metal still exists.

However, the melodies aren’t bad—far from it. Many of the songs are expertly played; the bridge on “Flesh Storm” or any of the numerous impressive solos showcase the band’s actual talent. “Eyes of the Insane” is a particular standout track on the album, taking a slower, more atmospheric approach to complement the meaning of the lyrics. The chorus is aptly jarring, almost staccato as bassist/lead vocalist Tom Araya screams about the horrors of war in a first-person narrative: “Got to make it stop/ Can't take it any more!/ Death's face keeps haunting me/ And just keeps coming back for more!”

While the experimentation they once boasted has been effectively nullified, the album itself is well crafted. At almost 40 minutes, the length and pacing are perfect, and production quality is hard to complain about. Classic Slayer fans should easily find solace here; anyone else can just expect basic, well-executed but relatively uninspired thrash metal.

  • slayer is a dickhead who needs to get a life and stop talking about shit a foolish man can't understand cause god doesn't hate anyone its just the goverment who wants us to believe that or an evil cd like this wouldn't be advatised on tv everyone who ever listens to this shit needs to wake up and relies the guys a scumbag thats making money to stop belief and how can u listen to a guy that wants to fuck corpses
  • I have not heard the album yet, SADLY, but I am a pretty big slayer fan...your're probably thinking how can you call yourself a fan if you haven't even heard the new album...thats easy...NO CASHFLOW! Besides that, I don't expect much from this album as God Hates Us All was pretty much the end of true slayer....as you listen to their latters albums (from divine intervention to God Hates Us All) you can see that they do infact change musically somewhat, and this change is not for the better...that also being said I am hoping this album will not take it back a couple steps and get slayer back in touch with their roots...if it doesn't I hope for one last GREAT album (seasons in the abyss, or south of heaven quality) and then for slayer to throw in the towel and step away with respect....
    Sincerly, Josh
  • Pre-mature review. This album grows on you.
  • Wow, Slayer's fans are nearly as horrible as the band.

    Great review Fraiman.
  • Michael Fraiman :
Your depraved and uninformed review definately leads me to believe that you are totally EMO. Seriuosly. Whoever it was that put you in charge of reviewing this album should probably be fired, because you are far more suited to reviewing coldplay or some other emo group.
The point at which your emo induced confusion becomes very evident is when you have the audacity to say that Slayer plays off of shock value........ Bands that play off of shock value are bands that, due to a complete lack of any musical talent, ..... must resort to - shock value ! additionally if this shock value actually happens to shock enough morons into paying for it these bands inevitably sell out to this with no hopes of a real musical future, and we all know what happens to sell outs and shock value artists..... nothing.
The fact that Slayer has always really been an under ground band, and never submitted to time, trends, emo, and idiots that make deliberately make un educated reviews completely defeats your little shock value theory. How can you shock someone when you are completely unconcerned with what they think of you in the first place.
Someone that has never actually been to a Slayer show would definately say something stupid such as " it won’t win over any new fans". This is true to a degree..... you wont see any emo loving music reviewers suddenly listening to Slayer. Im almost inclined to believe that Slayer wants it that way too. Every album that they have made is perfection in its own unique light, none really being better than the last.....they are all slayers best album.
Where every other has failed, sold out, burnt out, or simply died with the times, Slayer has flawlessly improved, without the slightest display of slowing down their Reign of Blood. In my opinion Slayer deserves the upmost respect. But . an opinion is like an $%#hole cause everyone has one. Unfornutately the emo croud feels the need to express theirs as well.
  • Dear Mr. Fraiman,

Don't you think you were a little harsh there with your comments about SLAYER's new album? Not too many bands come out with like a dozen studio albums even after they've made it in the genre. I have just purchased Christ illusion which I added to the rest of my SLAYER albums (i own all of them) and I can honestly say that they're not playing an "old card". If you have listened to almost any other slayer album you would notice that they're all different. The last one "God hates us all" was the angriest with very heavier riffs while the one before that (Diabolous) was raw and powerful. They have redefined their style numerous times over the decades and did it again with C.I. In this new album your right, the music is very talented but the lyrics kick ass!-they're just in your face slayer! And I know new fans that are buying this album. your clearly not a fan, and i don't think you know shit about how Slayer makes their albums. Slayer rules. And they'll fucking own any band you can bring them!!

    Yours Truly, Kyle
