“I did not say I was quitting I said I was taking a step back.” I just read a story which said otherwise, but maybe this was the whole media taking words out of context thing. I’m not sure. You know those cheesy scenes in movies where a character is trying to make a decision and an angel and a devil appear on their shoulders to argue over what should be done? Well, that’s how I feel right now. My little devil is shouting in a demonic voice about how I should blister Adams for being a goddamn pussy and taking to his blog to melodramatically announce his exodus from the music industry before quickly backtracking. My little angel is passionately whispering possible defenses for the eccentric singer-songwriter. This, my friends, is a quagmire. The arts aren’t a place for the sensitive of heart, which is kind of ironic considering those are the people most likely to celebrate the arts in the first place. Shitty reviews are more fun to write than their positive counterparts. People love to see a train wreck. Everything will always be criticized. People hate sex and air conditioning and cupcakes (cupcakes!) and Ryan Adams. Yes, he’s a punch line. But he’s also a talented artist who throws himself into creating music like Troy Polamalu does his helmet into receivers. This whole thing is either incredibly sad or uproariously funny. Decide for yourself. |
