Say What?! Simon Cowell Says He Doesn't Enjoy Music

It’s hard to avoid constant updates about American Idol nowadays, with the new season back on the air and fans everywhere obsessing about it. (“Oh my God—can you believe how that guy butchered that song?!” and so forth.) But it’s equally hard not to give in and read about it; I guess that’s what they call the trainwreck effect.

Contact Music has the latest tidbit to share about the insanely popular show, and it’s not pretty. According to the Web site, Idol host/music mogul Simon Cowell is not only against music he hears on the show—he is not too thrilled about listening to music, period.

“(I can) go weeks without listening to music for pleasure, he admits. "If you work at a fish and chip shop, it's unlikely you're going to eat fish and chips at night.

"The idea of sitting in an audition room for 14 hours then putting on my iPod - it's like, 'No! I can't do it."

This is an odd confession, especially since he also acknowledges that he doesn’t own an iPod. He made this clear after sharing that he rarely listens to music. That sound you hear is me losing both my breakfast and lunch. Please be kind, Simon, and let me keep my dinner.

Now I can understand, to some degree, his need to take breaks from music. There is only so much that a set of ears can take. But surely you can’t compare audition room amateur crooning with the classic works of The Beatles. Led Zeppelin. Elvis. There’s music, and then there’s what he’s subjected to hearing daily as part of his job. If anything, I'd think he would run home and grab the nearest radio to remind him what amazing music can sound like, in case he forgets.

It’s not like he was such a likeable guy in the first place, but I think he just set the bar even lower. Suddenly, Paula Abdul is looking pretty special. And that’s really not a compliment.
