As Columbus, Ohio waits patiently to host the first Stone Temple Pilots reunion show in May, Hollywood crushes a beer can against its forehead, spikes it, and does a celebratory end-zone dance. Ohio’s jaw hits the ground.
Jumping the gun on its upcoming 65-date national tour, reunited rock scourge Stone Temple Pilots Monday night played the first show since their 2002 breakup. The venue: a Hollywood Hills party held at the former estate of famed magician Harry Houdini. Unfortunately, the audience numbered only a few hundred, consisting mostly of privileged industry suits and über-lucky radio contest winners, but history doesn’t sweat the details.
According to Billboard Tuesday, the set opened with “Big Empty,” followed by catalogue staples such as “Vasoline,” “Interstate Love Song” and “Plush.” The crowd subsisted on free alcohol and hot dogs, and front man Scott Weiland cemented STP’s status among living bands with the announcement, “We’re back, and we’re going on tour this summer.”
Other songs rounding out the set included “Lady Picture Show,” “Big Bang Baby” and “Trippin’ on a Hole in a Paper Heart.” Between songs, Weiland commented on the significance of the venue, saying the mansion was the site of their video shoot for “Creep.” The resulting video was ultimately kept closeted. “It looked like an Obsession commercial, which is cool, but it wasn't what we wanted to portray,” Weiland said.
Realistically, with a steamroller group like Stone Temple Pilots, it was only a matter of time before they broke schedule and played a party. I really wish I could have been there – who knows how long they’ll go before they can’t stand each other again.
