Grab your ten-gallon hat and your snakeskin boots, Jessica Simpson has released the first single from her upcoming country album. In an interview with Billboard last year Simpson said, “I am a country girl. I grew up in Texas and country music was what I listened to. I always wanted to make a country album, but I wanted to wait until the time was right.” Apparently the right time is when Simpson is crawling to keep in the public eye. Her only claim to fame at the moment is clinging to quarterback boyfriend Tony Romo. But that’s on the rocks. So, yeah, alright, time for a country song, those are usually about being heartsick anyway and country music fans like myself don’t usually mind overemotional warbling. Right?
The single, “Come on Over”, is not to be confused with Christina Aguilera’s song of the same name. This is not a sexed-up purr to lure you into bed. This is a grabbing at the heels plead to listen. “I need you now, I need you bad / I need you, baby, looking just like that.” Carrie Underwood singing about keying an ex’s car it is not. The song is what we’ve come to expect from Jessica: unsexy and unashamed. Don’t believe me? Suit yourself:
