Welcome to the debut edition of the Friday Flash, where from this point forward, it will be CB Music’s mission to bring you the latest, breaking music news stories as you head out into the weekend to do…well, you know, whatever it is you do. Just consider us your primary news source for all things music once you’ve cracked that first cold one that screams “T.G.I.F.”
But before we get to the business at hand, a quick shoutout is in order here. For many years as I slaved away in a dreary nine to five sales gig, the official start of the weekend was always signaled by the commute home listening to Tom Leykis do his “Flash Friday” thing on the radio.
The concept was a beautifully simplistic one. Leykis would simply tell his listeners to flash their headlights, and any young, preferably busty females who happened to be listening were encouraged, upon seeing said headlights to, umm, flash their own (if ya’ get my drift).
Leykis has been off the air during drive time here in Seattle for a few years now. But God bless the man if he still didn’t give me a few good laughs at the end of every week during that otherwise brutal drive home. Anyway, I hope he sees my lifting his words "Flash" and "Friday" here (albeit reversed) as more the tribute it really is, than thievery. That said, let’s get to the headlines:
Tomorrow night (07/12/08), the Who will play a special concert in Los Angeles at UCLA's Pauley Pavilion, to be taped for later broadcast on VH1 as part of their annual Rock Honors series. Joining surviving members Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey will be the Flaming Lips, Pearl Jam, the Foo Fighters, Tenacious D, and others.
Meanwhile, according to Billboard Magazine, the Flaming Lips themselves are reported to be putting the finishing touches on a new album that Top Lip Wayne Coyne describes as “John Lennon meets Miles Davis.” The sound of that is almost enough to make me forget those fantasies I used to have driving home on “Flash Friday.”
Also from Billboard comes word that Metallica’s long awaited new Rick Rubin produced opus Death Magnetic will come in a deluxe, limited edition “coffin box” that will include everything from an additional disc of demos, to a DVD, to a T-shirt, to guitar picks. Almost makes you forget the Napster days, and all those websites like FuckLars.com.
Those of you who have any old Beatles memorabilia gathering dust in the garage may want to take note of this next item. At a London auction this week, the drum skin appearing on the cover of Sgt. Pepper was sold for $1.1 million. At the same auction, the hand printed lyrics for John Lennon’s “Give Peace A Chance” fetched $834,000. Time to go searching for those long, lost Beatles butcher covers…
Finally, here are this weekend’s best concert bets:
