It doesn’t occur very often, but something amazing is happening. On the rock-strewn plain of reality-show wasteland that is the modern-day MTV, an oasis of music – actual rock music – will be seen. Like a crystal fountain of rejuvenating elixir erupting from the cracked, lifeless desert floor, it will emerge. And like half-insane nomads and wanderers, let us drink from the well of pleasurable sound and imagery before it vanishes into another dry, sandy wash of underdeveloped Simpson drama and canned, frat-house dating caucuses.
If promotionals can be trusted, dorky cool guys Weezer will be temporarily swamping your MTV timetables with their delicious videos during the week of June 2, as per their installment of MTV’s 52 Bands/52 Weeks. In honor of the third self-titled Weezer album, aka “the Red Album,” released Tuesday, MTV will be cycling 11 hours of Weezer into the week’s regimen of programming. In other words, MTV will be slightly closer to the grandeur it had in its ‘90s heyday, when music was an actual priority. I believe that’s worth at least a Jolt Cola or two, and maybe even some guacamole.
So if you’re as fatigued as I know you are of the pseudo-scriptless, recklessly produced, trend-seeking nightmare currently dominating our pop culture, now is the time for a much-needed break. Go ahead, indulge in some old-fashioned music TV. And while you’re at it, indulge in the Weezer promo vids below, courtesy of Fanscape. Bon appetit.
