Nearly a year after the second parting of New Order, the synth-rock staple that came out of the ruins of post-punk icons Joy Division, the group is releasing a live DVD – a flashback to a band that has experienced more than their share of career turbulence.
The DVD, entitled New Order: Live in Glasgow, features footage from a two-night performance the band played at the Glasgow Carling Academy in October 2006. On the set list are four tracks from the catalogue of the band’s shadowy precursor, NME reported Tuesday. A bonus disc will also accompany the release, hitting your DVD player with previously unseen archival footage, plus a nice length of vintage ‘80s footage from various live shows. Did you say you wanted to see unsavory hairdos and wardrobe? That’s what I thought. The whole thing is due to drop June 2, so be ready with your pastel jive-tunes credit card. According to Reuters, the band’s latest parting of ways came in May 2007 when bassist Peter Hook and lead singer Bernard Sumner hit a scrape; Hook made a sidelong announcement of the breakup during a radio interview, followed by a painful-sounding blog entry on the band’s Myspace page. The band first split in 1993, when members grew sick of each other and pursued various side projects. Their foundation was in the 1980 fall of the brooding Joy Division, after lead singer Ian Curtis’ suicide prompted the remaining members to continue on their own. Seeing the band performing their previous incarnation’s material is always a refreshing sight, so this release definitely has that going for it. Does Peter Hook’s ungainly bass playing posture help the cause? You decide. |
