In 1994, Nas’ Illmatic broke through the rap scene with what is still considered to be the best hip-hop album to date. In 1996, he befriended with Lauren Hill. In 1998, he crucified himself next to Diddy and in 2006, he boldly proclaimed the death of hip hop all the while battling a major diss war with Jay-Z that spanned five years. Rap’s most creatively philosophical lyricist illustrates the world’s social hysteria, consistently trashing political correctness to make his own rules. A native of America’s largest housing project, this New York rapper poetically reimburses past and present one in the same.

Nas made headlines immediately after he announced the album’s original controversial title, Ni**ger late last year, coming under fire from various political outlets, the NAACP and Rev. Jesse Jackson. Though Def Jam head L.A. Reid publicly backed the rapper, Nas’ management eventually came to the agreement to change the title amid distribution and sales concerns. “It's important to me that this album gets to the fans," he said. “The people will always know what the real title of this album is and what to call it." For this, his ninth official effort, the album features guest appearances from Busta Rhymes, Chris Brown, and The Game. The first single, “Hero” overshadows the title controversy, and brings us back to what this album is really about – a devout rapper laying his skills out on a silver platter, ready to be devoured.
