Darren Aronofsky must be feeling pretty good right now, now that The Wrestler is getting the kind of critical response that was sorely lacking for The Fountain. In fact, he's feeling so good that he thinks The Fountain is ready for another go-round-- at least for the fans who supported his gorgeous, slightly crazy vision back in 2006."It's something more for fans," Aronofsky told First Showing, elaborating on some comments he made to MTV about recutting the film. "I worked on the film for 6 years and it went through a lot of versions. So I was always curious for myself to see what that alternative version would be." The question, of course, is whether Warner Bros.-- or anyone-- will re-release a movie that only made $10 million its first time in theaters. Aronofsky himself admits the demand may not be there now, but given the critical success of The Wrestler and his upcoming reboot of the Robocop franchise, Aronofsky's fanbase is only likely to grow in coming years. And new fans and old will likely have yet another puzzle to solve with the new Fountain. ""It's very similar but it's looking at a few things in a few different ways and answers a few questions for people and raises some new questions in other ways." I admit, I fell much harder for the straightforward storytelling of The Wrestler than I did for the visual pyrotechnics of The Fountain, but I'm still interested in whatever Aronofsky would have to offer anew. And hey, I didn't see The Fountain the first time in theaters-- that's one new fan! Only, what, several million of us left to go?
