Look, I loved Tom Cruise in Tropic Thunder. His extended cameo as hairy studio exec Les Grossman was truly hilarious and his willingness to play someone so disgusting and over the top was pretty refreshing after all the crap Tom has put his fans through in recent years. But he doesn’t deserve awards for it. He was playing a cartoon character, it wasn’t a great performance. It was a guy in prosthetics hamming it up and having fun. There’s nothing wrong with that, but there is something wrong with the Golden Globes giving him a Best Supporting Actor nomination for it.
Of course as evidenced by the complete lack of proper Dark Knight nominating in this year’s GG’s, the Globes are out of their freakin mind anyway. 2009 may long be remembered as the year people finally wised up and stopped taking them seriously. That doesn’t however mean we don’t want to see more of Tom Cruise Gossman. Just stop giving him trophies for it.
It seems Cruise has just as much fun playing the character as we had watching him play it. In fact, he’s planning to do even more with Les. Speaking with E! he reveals, “I’ve talked about doing different videos with the character.” Except it’s more than just talk. He continues, “I’ve started working with Ben [Stiller] on it, and we’ve kind of talked about different things to do. We were gonna do some in our free time, but we haven’t found the free time…yet.”
From those brief snippets it sounds like the sort of thing that might end up on Will Ferrell’s Funny Or Die website, but E! claims Cruise told them a movie isn’t out of the question.
