I wouldn’t go so far as to call myself a defender of Steve Martin’s Pink Panther remake, but I do think everyone was a little quick to kick it in the nads. Maybe it’s because I actually sat down and watched all of the original Pink Panther movies before going to see it. Folks, I’m here to tell you, we’re overrating them. I know, I had all these wonderful, nostalgic memories attached to them too. Growing up, the Pink Panther movies were unquestionably my Dad’s favorites, and more than one Sunday afternoon after a quick trip to the video store was spent on the floor in front of him watching Peter Sellers bumble his way through another caper.
Bad news though: They don’t hold up very well. Watch Sellers’ movies back to back with the first one done by Steve Martin and you’ll see the difference between them isn’t as great as you might assume. Both are somewhat enjoyable, funny in spots, with a lot of long, lonely, lulls between legitimately funny jokes. Mildly enjoyable stuff. So it’s with those expectations that I’ll be heading into Pink Panther 2. Make me laugh a time or two Steve, and we can part ways as friends. Whether the sequel will be able to pull off even that much, remains uncertain though. Below we’ve got 7 new clips from The Pink Panther 2.
