Zac Efron Wants To Thrill YouBy Katey Rich: 2009-06-23 18:29:32
Thus far in his career Zac Efron has made all the right steps, establishing himself as a tween heartthrob in High School Musical and then leaving that franchise at just the right moment, breaking into the mainstream with Hairspray and cementing that leading man status with 17 Again. When he ditched the Footloose remake back in March it seemed like another instance of Efron taking control of his own career. And now we know where he's headed-- to thrillers.According to Variety, Efron will star in an untitled thriller for Mandate Pictures, which is offering no plot description and is therefore guaranteeing rumors of "Zac Efron playing a serial killer." Well, at the very least, I plan to start those rumors. More likely the movie will find Efron playing some sort of more grown-up role, maybe a rookie detective or a college student protecting his girlfriend from a secret past, or whatever. You guys have seen enough movie thrillers, you know pretty much all the possible directions this can go. I'm a well-established Efron apologist, and will see him do pretty much anything-- and yes, that includes playing a serial killer. But is he quite ready to be that actor who plays a huge multitude of different roles? Should he maybe stick with comedy a bit longer, and become more than that floppy-haired kid whose girlfriend took the nude photos of herself? He's been hanging around Leonardo DiCaprio a lot lately, and it's not surprising to see Efron try to make the same leap from Teen Heartthrob to Serious Actor. But at 21, he might not quite have earned it yet. What do you think?
