Barrymore Begins Music And Lyrics

Barrymore Begins Music And Lyrics Lately, Drew Barrymore has been good for about one movie a year, and this year her movie will be something called Music & Lyrics By starring opposite Hugh Grant.

It's written and directed by Marc Lawrence, the guy who brought you Two Weeks Notice, a very good, underrated rom-com. That makes this is a project worthy of some notice. The big news on the project today from Warner Bros. is that they've just started production, and they're currently shooting on location in New York. Lawrence loves big cities.

So what's it about? Hugh Grant plays a washed up 80's pop star named Alex Fletcher, reduced to using what tiny bit of fame he has left to get gigs at county fairs and amusement parks. He gets a chance at a comeback (if he didn't it would be much of a movie) when a reigning diva named Cora Corman invites him to write and sing a duet with her. Alex has never written lyrics, and only has a few days to come up with some. That's when this plot synopsis gets weird, for you see his quirky "plant lady" (WB's words not mine) played by Drew Barrymore shows up and collaborates with him. It's probably safe to assume that by "plant lady" Warner Bros. means she sells plants, not that she actually is a plant. Though if she were a plant, that might be interesting. But that's probably best reserved for M. Night territory.

In addition to Grant and Barrymore, they've brought in the recently unemployed Brad Garret (TV's "Everybody Loves Raymond") to serve as comic relief, and the not so recently unemployed Kristen Johnson (TV's "3rd Rock From the Sun") to serve as a female comedic foil. They'll probably fill the rom-com best friend roles. You know the drill.

Look, the plot sounds a dodgy. The main character sounds like a spin off of Bill Nighy's washed up rocker Billy Mack from Hugh Grant's Love Actually. Though Lawrence was responsible for the greatness of Two Weeks Notice, he also wrote the worst film of 2005, Miss Congeniality 2. I'd call that a wash. Keep an eye out for the first trailer before you decide if this one looks any good.
