When casting for Batman Begins started coming out, it was like dreamland for comic book geeks everywhere. Liam Neeson? Christian Bale? Gary Oldman and Morgan Freeman – in a Batman movie???
Although it’s assumed most of the original cast will be returning for The Dark Knight, the sequel to Batman Begins, and yet it still feels like another geek dreamland. Health Ledger as The Joker; Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent; and now… Maggie Gyllenhaal replacing Katie Holmes as Rachel Dawes. We had previously reported the rumor that Gyllenhaal would be taking over the role of the Junior D.A.; a role left vacant by Holmes’ “decision” to depart from the sequel. Now Variety has confirmed that Gyllenhaal is in final talks to appear in The Dark Knight which begins shooting later this year. As before, the new Batman franchise is shaping up to become something truly fascinating. That 2008 release date can’t get here soon enough.
