1999’s The Blair Witch Project opened up Pandora’s Box for low-budget movie marketability. The handheld, faux-documentary style raised many interesting ideas about the basis of terror. The only goal of the Blair Witch was to create a convincing mythology, different from other films of the day. Of course, this technique has continued with Cloverfield (a.k.a. 1-18-08, a.k.a. Who Gives a Shit) causing a ruckus. The handheld video camera technique draws you in because it isn’t filled with pretense, like contemplative story-boarded shots. However, the technique has yet to transcend its gimmick, and it seems that Rec is no different.
The Teaser trailer for this Spanish film just recently hit YouTube and it looks mildly interesting, at least from the three shots we get of the film. For all I can tell, it looks like a handheld zombie movie, and I do love zombie movies. So, this one might be worth keeping an eye on. Check out the trailer below to decide for yourself.
