Is Ryan Gosling The New Jack Ryan?

Is Ryan Gosling The New Jack Ryan? Tom Clancy’s heroic character Jack Ryan may not have been around as long as James Bond, but he’s starting to rack up the actors just like Bond has. To date, the role has been played by three different actors. Alec Baldwin originated the character in The Hunt for Red October (which, despite being an excellent film could be considered the George Lazenby performance of the role) before the part was handed off to Harrison Ford. When the studio decided to go younger with a “prequel” of sorts, Ben Affleck was handed the part. Now it looks like Ryan may get its fourth actor in Ryan Gosling.

Moviehole reports that Gosling may be taking over the part in a new Jack Ryan adventure that may share something else with 007 – a departure from the original author’s work. If Paramount moves forward with a new series, it wouldn’t be based on any of Tom Clancy’s novels. Apparently the studio owns the rights to make movies of the character without having to base them on Clancy’s work. They don’t even have to have Clancy’s permission. Does this sound like a bad idea to anyone else?

Interestingly, it doesn’t sound like anyone who has dealt with the previous movies is joining the new project, titled By Any Means Necessary. No previous Ryan, no Clancy, and franchise director Phillip Noyce also appears to be sitting this one out as well. As for the script – Moviehole points out that Paramount already has a script titled By Any Means Necessary, about a cop who uses a jailed mobster boss for information about a possible terrorist attack. Will this be Ryan’s next adventure?

I’ve never been a huge fan of the Jack Ryan movies, so I’m not devastated by this news, but I’ve rarely seen a franchise move forward without its creator (or the people involved in making it a success) that hasn’t turned into a disaster.
