Vin Diesel has officially lost his mind. Maybe it’s the pressure of watching his once promising career slowly spiral out of control and into a black hole. Maybe he sucked in too many exhaust fumes while shooting Fast and Furious. Whatever he’s reason, the guy is clearly deluded, so deluded that he thinks there will be not one, but two sequels to The Chronicles of Riddick. What’s more, he thinks creator David Twohy is science fiction’s answer to Peter Jackson.
The big Diesel tells MTV: “David Twohy right now is writing the scripts. The only question is whether we take a page from the ‘Lord of the Rings’ guys and try to shoot the two chapters at the same time. There are two more in mind.” That’s the only question Vin? Shouldn’t the only question be how in the hell will you get someone to pony up the amount of cash necessary to make a big budget blockbuster, when the box office results of the previous one rather clearly prove that absolutely no one cares to see it? I mean, if I was trying to get these things made, I know that’s something I’d be thinking about. What do I know. I wasn’t in The Pacifier. Besides Riddick did nearly break even, once you take into account international audiences and assuming they spent absolutely no money on advertising... which they did. Maybe they sold a bunch of Riddick coloring books to make up the difference. As one of the very few people in the world who watched The Chronicles of Riddick and actually really liked it, I’d love to have a sequel. I’d love to have two more sequels. It’s just not happening though. Granted, the whole Riddick thing was indeed originally conceived of as a trilogy. The Chronicles of Riddick was a moneyed-up sequel to the low-budget, cult-hit Pitch Black, and was intended to launch a big, brand new franchise of films based around Vin’s badass warrior character Riddick. But when the first movie tanked, Riddick was thrown on the trash heap. If Twohy is actually writing scripts, sadly the best they can probably hope for with them is some sort of direct-to-DVD movie with discount, Pete’s Dragon style 2D animation substituted for special effects. The problem is simply that except for me and a handful of IMDB users who’ve had the good sense to rate Chronicles of Riddick as “underrated”… no one cares. Vin though, thinks the rest of the franchise hasn’t been made yet, simply because they’re taking their time with it. He says, “it just takes five years to make another one because David Twohy and I are so precious about it.” Vin may be suffering from the early onset of dementia, but give the guy credit for staying passionate about a character he clearly cares about. He’s done his best to talk up the possibility of more Riddick for a long time now, and it doesn’t look like he’s going to give up any time soon.
