Spider-Man 2 was one of the biggest movies of all time, but if early online ticket sales are any indicator, then Spider-Man 3 is not only going to beat it, but just about every other movie ever made at the box office. Peter Parker is coming for you Captain Jack.

MovieTickets.com is reporting that even though Spidey 3 is still nearly two weeks off, tickets to Spider-Man 3 are selling at a nearly three times the rate that tickets for Spider-Man 2 were selling. Fandango.com reports that Spidey 3 tickets are selling four times faster. Grab your calculators and let’s do some math.

Spider-Man 2 made $88 million dollars its opening weekend. Multiply that times three and you have $264 million. So if Spider-Man 3 really sells three times as many tickets as Spider-Man 2, then it will open with $264 million dollars. Sound like a ridiculously huge number? It is. The current record holder for all time biggest opening weekend is Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest. It made $135 million. Not even close.

Of course, the laws of physics may make it impossible for Spider-Man 3 to make $264 million in a single weekend. In order to do that they’d probably need to have ever screen in every theater in the country playing Spider-Man 3 to sold out crowds. We don’t know how many screens Spidey 3 is going to get yet, but it’s a fair bet that it won’t get them all.

What this data does tell you though, is that you’d better get up off your couch and reserve a few Spider-Man 3 tickets if you want to have any chance at all of seeing Spidey 3 when it opens May 4, or for that matter any time in the next couple of weeks thereafter.
