The past few weeks have been big for Pirates of the Caribbean sequel news. We’ve heard that more Pirates are happening, Johnny Depp is back and making more than $50 million, and with information delivered by one of our most proven sources we told you here that Disney was considering Tim Burton to direct and either Sacha Baron Cohen or Russell Brand to co-star in at least one of the future Caribbean flicks. Unfortunately, Terry Rossio says it’s all hogwash.
Who is Terry Rossio? He had a hand in writing not only all three Pirates of the Caribbean movies, but many other recent Disney blockbusters as well. Speaking out on the forums at Wordplay, Rossio says: “For the record, none of the recent Pirates 4 rumors have any truth, including the so-called record 50 million dollar payday for Depp.” He then goes on to address our specific story directly saying, “Some pretty funny stuff, though. Sacha Cohen? Tim Burton? Studios are way too protective of their franchises for that sort of thing.”
Rossio did write all three Pirates movies, so he should have the inside track, shouldn’t he? Maybe not. First off, there’s been no sign that Rossio is actually involved in the fourth film, and even if he was, you’d have to wonder why as a screenwriter he’d be privy to the dollar amounts of Johnny Depp’s contract negotiations. That seems somewhat unlikely.
Then there’s Rossio’s own logic to consider. He claims Disney would be too protective of its franchise to involve Tim Burton in a Pirates movie. Apparently Rossio missed the recent announcement where Disney signed multi-picture deals with Burton and then summarily handed him the keys to just about everything in the Magic Kingdom, except that is for Pirates of the Caribbean. There have already been rumblings that Gore Verbinski may not want to return, if he doesn’t, what’s Disney supposed to do with its fourth movie? Sit on it? They have to get a director, and you can’t hire a new director by clutching your franchise to your chest and hiding in a Space Mountain janitor’s closet. It only makes sense to go with a company man, a company man with a reputation as a premiere talent and a proven ability to handle a properly piratical tone. Why not Tim Burton? For that matter why not Sacha Baron Cohen? They brought in Bill Nighy for the second movie, I guess Borat is scarier than the guy who sang naked, horny Christmas songs in Love Actually.
For now, there’s no way to know which direction Disney will jump with their next batch of Pirates movies, except to say that Johnny Depp will be in them while Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom will not. Of course if you’d been paying attention, we told you that somewhere back in summer of 2007, long before Keira hitched up her corset and went before the media to tell us all she’s done sogging around in the ocean. We’ve reconfirmed it with our sources, and they still tell us that Burton is being considered for the directing job, as are Cohen and Brand for Depp’s sidekick. In fact, both our scoop and the rumor of Depp’s big paycheck have since been further confirmed by the Daily Record, where they now insist that in addition to Johnny’s $50 mil, Russell Brand actually has landed the part and will earn $8.5 million. Sorry Rossio, we’re standing on pretty solid ground for this one.

Ok I am a Daily Record reader and yes it is Scotlands biggest newspaper but what they are NOT is in the scooping business and most likely took the story from your site and dressed it up for people that won't have got it elsewhere - and it was only a small article on like page 18. But I can for absolute sure guarantee that they have no insider information.
David, the Daily Record story contained a lot of information that we did not have and which they could not have gotten from our story.
So, either they made the whole thing up or they got their information from someone else. With the track record of British newspapers recently when it comes to scooping, it's certainly possible that they could have made the whole thing up.
That's what I meant by dressed it up, facts just tend to get in the way of a good story in the papers so it's a 99.99% guarantee that they have no facts and there insider is inside there head.
Personally, I can hardly wait to see Pirates 4! I loved 1,2 and 3, but I do not think it will be the same without Gore directing. Johnny is what Pirates what it is, but he and Gore worked together so well that I don't think it will be the same or as good without Gore. As for Johnny's paycheck, so what! They made alot of money from the 1st 3 and I think Johnny deserves every penny! He is the most artistic actor of our time and the way he creates his own characters is trully fantastic! Go for it Johnny!
I'm not British and I don't have any regular contact with the work of the Daily Record, so I'll have to bow to your superior knowledge of them.
I can only report that they've said it, it is beyond my ability to confirm the accuracy of their statements.
I can tell you our source is definitely not inside our heads, and must be kept anonymous to protect his/her future employment. We'll just have to wait and see what pans out I suppose! Mr. Rossio may yet turn out to be correct, after all even our source has said the above is only one of the possibilities being considered.
I don't know if I'll like Pirates of the Caribbean 4, it won't be the same without Kiera Knightly and Orlando Bloom, but I deffiently want to see what happens with Captain Jack Sparrow and Will Turner.
Johny Depp Must be rolling in the dough, especially since he is also starring in another move comming out soon, and he just finished with Sweeny Todd.
I guess all that matter when it comes down to it is that we have the same loveable Captain Jack Sparrow, witty and a sense of humor.
I think a fourth pirate movie would be awesome, and I love Johnny Dep as Captain Jack sparrow, but it wouldn't be the same if Keira Knightly and Orlando Blooms characters were not in the fourth one so I think I would have a hard time watching that movie.
I think they're making a movie of it, since they're have been pictures of Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow in a Vicking setting, but that could be a photo shop, but they could do an off shoot of the trilogy around Jack Sparrow and Barbosa or some other Pirate Captin and their search for immorality if they wanted to, there is more than enough historical material and mythlogy to make a movie of that alone in a story. I hope they do make another, but if they don't that is okay too. I love the trilogy. I just wonder about that picture on the internet with Johnny and the Vickings in the background and where did it come from since it has been showing up on sites like this one? Hopefully it is, if it isn't and it just was put on the cutting room floor at Disney, then that is fine with me too. I love the Trilogy and a couple Burchimer movies, he is like the David Gibbens and Clive Cussler of movies of History and Mythology significance for this generation.
I love all the Pirate movies thus far... but, if they can't get Kiera Knightly and Orlando Bloom they might as well not bother making the movie. Is this going to pick up where three left off? Or is this going to be a totally different scenario?
As for how much Johnny Depp makes, who cares? I wonder if he needs a side kick, I’m available!!
i loved all the pirate movies!!! depp is awesome he is charming handsome and sooooo funny.... i will always be the 1st in line to see ALL these movies as far as im conserned they can keep making them.... as for orlando and kiera not being on board the ship i will miss them however it will be their loss...... i knw the film will be great...... luv you johhny
::Scoffs::: I was looking forward to it, but since Orlando and Kiera aren't going to be in it forget it! Orlando Bloom and Kiera Knightly are Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann. I wouldn't be able to handle seeing anyone else in those roles. Sorry Disney but you aint going to count on me for POTC 4.
I agree with Kathy. I love the pirate movies, but whats the point of making a fourth one if Kiera Knightly and Orlando Bloom aren't going to be in it? Like I said before they are Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann. Just like Tobey McGuire is Spiderman and Daniel Radcliff is Harry Potter. Besides Orlando is my Pirates honey.
Tim Burton would be the best thing that ever happened to the franchise. The 2nd and 3rd films were overly long and had ridiculous storylines. Glad that Knightly and Bloom are gone as they had no more to offer anyway. I'd like to see Helena Bonham Carter in the film as she is such a talented, dark, groovy woman. Maybe this could be Pirates meets Sweeney Todd.
I have enjoyed the movies, but with this recession who can afford to go???
I think it's DIGUSTING how much actors make to literally work a few months, or a few weeks with people losing their homes and working as hard as they do!!! I'll wait til it comes out on video! We all end up paying their salaries and I just hate it...the same with overpriced athletes! HATE 'EM!! Work a real job, quit bitc*ing about your spoiled lives and help those in real need in this troubled country!!
I think it doesn't make the movie is if Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom aren't in the movie.
Those two and Johnny Depp make the whole movie. It just won't be the same.
Its obvious they've ran out of movie ideas for them to wanna make a POTC 4 without keira or orlando. I for sure won't bother watching EVEN when it comes out on dvd.
I loved all the Pirate movies. I've never liked sequels, they just don't have as much impact as the first movie, however, that was not true for Pirates. Depp and Knightly and Bloom play off of each other so well I don't think the 4th movie will be the same without them.
I found out today on another site, Johnny is doing the fourth movie. Which is great, so the photo is legitamate. People in entertainment do get overpaid compared to the rest of us, some of them deserve it. I can't wait, and besides the story with Orlando and Keira is pretty much over, if you watched the end of the 3rd movie, and Jack Sparrow is a compelling and fun enough character that he can carry a novel or movie very easily and that is all that is essential for it to successed and when it comes to blitz seasons at the retailers for Disney, most of the Pirates items go fast, so it will work out for them. I loved the movies and I like how Bruckhimer plays off History, Mythology of a historical place, and the characters. I can't wait to see what happens next in the series, since I thought the original movies were awesome and cute in their own adult way as well as for the children to get a major interest in hisotry and mythlogy. So good luck to Johnny and the movie.
I agree that Johnny's Jack Sparrow is interesting enough to be the only focus of a film. Truth to tell, I found the whole Knightley/Bloom story a bore. There was no spark between the actors and their departure is actually a breath of fresh air. However, rumors of adding a younger brother for Jack is disturbing. It feels like that would be an addition akin to the cute kid added to a failing tv show. It doesn't work and it's a slap at the strength of the Jack character. Johnny doesn't need a younger self and frankly, I'm not interested in that story line. Jack is who he is and I'd like to stay focused and explore all aspects of that intriguing character and not be sidelined a kid brother.
I absolutely love the idea of Tim Burton directing and I hope he does. He will give us a visual treat, memorable characters and his action sequences will be very taut and realistic, without the MTV style editing.
