With Tobey Maguire still uncertain about whether or not he’ll be playing Spider-Man after the third movie, Sony is preparing a contingency plan that will allow the franchise to move on without him. We have a line on who one of the actors they’re considering to replace him is.
One of our most reliable, proven, inside sources emailed me tonight to let us know that Joseph Gordon-Levitt, star of The Lookout, could be in contention to be the next Peter Parker. Our source says the people in charge over at Sony were impressed by his performance in The Lookout, and that has him on their radar. And it should. Levitt’s brilliant in it. Actually, he’s brilliant in everything. He’s one of the best young actors working today. He also has the right build, the right look, and could easily step in where Tobey Maguire has already tread.
Till now, a lot of the focus for who might replace Maguire if he leaves has been on Jake Gyllenhaal. He’s the obvious choice for the part, but he’s also more famous and more expensive. Levitt is cheaper, younger, and you know what… he’s a much better fit than Jake Gyllenahaal. For the first time I can actually imagine someone being better at playing Peter Parker than Tobey Maguire. That’s how good he is.
Of course everything depends on what Maguire decides to do. If he ends up sticking around, this discussion is moot. Even if he doesn’t, for now this should only be considered a rumor. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is only in contention for the part, we’re not saying he has it. No one does, until Tobey makes up his mind.

Levitt would really take the character into a new direction, which would be welcomed by the fourth installment. At the same time, I don't think this guy wants to be identified by the entire world as Spidey just yet--I mean, he's still shaking off those angels in the outfield hallucinations.
I've always thought that Toby Maguire was a little too scrawny and not nearly atractive enough to play Peter Parker/Spiderman but I have gotten used to him and he plays the character well. I think that replacing him would be a horrible mistake but if they had to then they shouldn't bring in someone even uglier to play this part. I don't like this levitt guy. Never did. I think that he is a terrible actor and always has been. If there is to be a new spiderman than it should be someone who is way better looking,a good actor and built way better!!!!!
uhh,you guys do know that peter IS a litle scrawny 16 yr old,why to people want some buff dude?even when he became spidey,he still wasnt that buff,i think tobey was the perfect casting choice but joseph would be a great contender
hey i am a big fan of spider man. i have always followed it. i think that yall need to keep the same people in spider-man 4. it would be wrong to to change people. i dont care if toby is asking to much money pay him for it. he is a very good spider man. thanks for reading this.
spider-man movies are my favorite. if Levitt were to replace Maquire, i would probably not see anymore of them. Tobey Maquire gets replaced by the kid from 3rd Rock From the Sun? i don't care how impressive he was in The Lookout, he does not fit this part
Joseph Gordon-Levitt should've been Peter Parker from the get-go, he is perfect for the role, I have never liked Tobey Maguire & always wished that he would be replaced. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is the man, Spider-man!
Levitt is an amazing actor - Mysterious Skin and Brick are testament to that. Get over the whole '3rd Rock' kid hang ups you have and broaden your horizons a bit. The guy's an amazing talent.
I definitely agree with Amanda. When Spider-Man first came out I was really hyped and excited. I was expecting a big, muscular and somewhat handsome guy, but when I saw who was playing Spidey I was a little disappointed. Tobey Maguire is way too PUNY!!! I am not saying he is not a good actor, but he is not physically fit for the role. Unfortunately, I think it's a little late now to change casts. They should have gone with a better alluring actor since the beginning. People HATE to see different faces when they go see a sequel because somehow when you change casts the movie just doesn't "click."
Don't you guys feel that Tobey Maguire is not funny enough?
I mean...In the comic books and in the cartoons Spidey is a real funny guy. He is always making fun of the bad guys and using catchie phrases. I think that the one thing missing is Spidey's famous smack talk and quick one-liners.
Whoever plays Spider-Man next should definitely work on the humor.
"Jake resembles spiderman more and has the height and built for it."
spiderman is not suppost to be a big, tall, built, guy, (for abreif while in the 70's, he kinda had a buffer look, but, for the most part hes not a big dude)
I've thoroughly enjoyed all spiderman movies so far and think Tobey Maguire was a great spiderman and should be kept for the fourth. He's the perfect Peter Parker.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt is an fantastic actor (one of my fav's) and though he'd do the role well, I think he's just a little too cool for spiderman, I think it's a little cheesy for him. He's not the kid from '3rd rock' anymore.
Billy, my sentiments exactly. As a long-time follower of the whole spiderman character and storyline I couldn't stand the fact that Tobey was cast for this part. He's a good enough actor and the whole franchise is well crafted but people keep bringing up looks. If they were really true to the whole "spiderman" look they wouldn't have cast Tobey in the first place. JGL would bring an intensity to spiderman that is sorely needed and his comedic elements would go over more convincingly. And yes, P. Parker is known for his witty dialog and he is a tall and skinny guy. 5 10, that's JGL's height as well. Would some buff guy swinging from building to building as spiderman make any sense. NO.
I enjoyed the first 2 in the series whereas the 1st one was my favorite. The third one was okay. If JGL is added in the fourth it would renew my interest.
I think Joseph Gordon-Levitt would be great. Tobey Maguire would be okay, but I think they could do a lot more with Joseph Gordon-Levitt. I really don't think they should get anyone else, because a strong-looking person would not be what I ever pictured Spider-Man. I could go either way, basically.

"Also, isn't spidey blonde in the comic books and in the cartoons?"
Seriously now? What comic book/cartoons have you been watching? From what I'm aware of and I'm quite sure everyone else is.... Spidey has always been a brunette.
As far as I'm concerned Joseph Gordon-Levitt would do great as Spidey. Have you seen Tobey before he even played Spidey? Yea, a scrawny looking book nerd. He actually even beefed up for that scene when he woke up after being bitten by the spider. So, why can't Joseph GL do the same thing? Spidey's a weak skinny nerd that gets bullied on a daily basis. If he was so good looking and buff why would he seriously have trouble getting MJ in the first place.
Also, his smart side was kind of cut from the movie. In the comics and cartoons he MADE himself a set of web shooters instead of acquiring it from the spider bite. So, he's a complete science geek from what I'm aware of. Not a big buff sports jock.
