Jeff Bridges Talks Tron 2

By Ed Perkis: 2008-10-06 12:52:28
Jeff Bridges Talks Tron 2 The lowlight of my movie news reporting year so far has to be my blowing out of the Comic-Con panel for Race to Witch Mountain in order to get to an interview with Dwayne Johnson. My early exit caused me to miss a teaser trailer for Tron 2 and Head Honcho Josh Tyler’s disappointed “Oh, that’s OK” did not carry the weight of conviction. Now, it turns out, Jeff Bridges himself has decided to rub my nose in it.

Bridges was talking to The Guardian about How to Lose Friends & Alienate People when the reporter tossed in a couple of Tron 2 questions. While answering the question why he agreed to do another Tron movie, Bridges said, “Doing the teaser trailer for Comic-Con, I had my first experience of motion capture. And that's turning the industry on its head. It's amazing being part of that.” Thanks for twisting the knife a little farther, Jeff.

Bridges noted some other reasons to do Tron 2 now. “Engaging in that world again feels just like it did all that time ago. Basically, I'm still a child, I love being childlike, and here was another chance to play with these crazy toys. And the cutting-edge technology makes it exciting.” The technology seems to have captured him, since he brings it up again in response to a question about how you bring Tron, which has a retro appreciation, up to date. Bridges said, “Well, when we made Tron there was no internet, no cellphones. But now we have motion capture, so I think we'll get a far more successful version of the story, which is someone literally getting sucked into a video game. When we did King Kong in the 70s, one minute you'd have a shot of Rick Baker in this big suit and then you'd cut to this 80ft stiff model, and they looked nothing alike. Compare to that Peter Jackson's King Kong the technology is there and they did a wonderful job. I thought they created a beautiful Kong. So I hope that'll be the same for Tron.”

Since everyone knows that technology can’t save a bad movie, only make a good story better, let’s hope there is more to Tron 2 than better special effects. The rest of the interview covers The Dude and some of Bridge’s other recent movies like Iron Man.
