The Mummy 3 May Be In Trouble

By Josh Tyler: 2007-02-05 01:57:22
The Mummy 3 May Be In Trouble There have been a lot of conflicting stories flying around lately concerning the pending third Mummy movie. Most of them seem to involve Brendan Fraser. For instance, a few months ago we heard that Fraser was already signed for The Mummy 3, and that his character was in the script. But since then the whole Fraser thing has become muddled. Everyone keeps saying “if” he agrees to do the movie or he “might consider” doing The Mummy 3. So what’s the deal? Isn’t he already contracted?

Well, one of the wilder rumors flying across my desk tonight says that the reason for all the confusion is that he’s holding out for more money. Word from a couple of our secret scoopers is that despite what you may have heard, Fraser has read the script, it sucks, and so he won’t touch it unless they back up a Brinks truck. The big bad rumor is that it’s not just Fraser that hates the script, everyone involved does, including the studio. So their point of contention is not whether or not the movie will be good (everyone agrees it won’t), but how much they’ll have to pay Brendan to roll around in the mud for another piece of crap flick.

Meanwhile, Rachel Weisz has been pretty open about being willing to come back, but part of the problem in getting a firm commitment from her may be that the franchise’s former godfather Stephen Sommers has nothing to do with this one. Look, it’s easy to pick apart his first two Mummy movies, but whatever flaws they might have I think they’re a lot of fun. Sommers knows how to deliver goofy, all-out monster fun. His name has been slapped on The Mummy 3, but it’s just a credit. He’s out. Without him, they’ve gone to director Rob Cohen. Stealth anyone? The guy has a pretty spotty reputation. Rachel may not be comfortable with Sommers and from what our spy says the script is so terrible that even Universal wouldn’t blame her for bailing out. If even the studio is that unhappy with the script, you’ve got to wonder how long it will be before they tell Brendan they aren’t paying and simply bring in a cast of replacement players to make the thing on the cheap and either shove it out in a crap month like January just to milk whatever they can from it, or shove it out direct to DVD.

But like anything we bring you from an anonymous scooper, take the above with a big grain of salt. We’re not going to believe any of it until we get some sort of serious confirmation, and neither should you. It’s a rumor until we’re able to say otherwise.

On no, disaster!!! After the sheer brilliance of Mummy 2 it seems inconcievable that Mummy 3 could not happen....my World is truly ROCKed!

  1. lisa Says:

Don't screw up a winning formula. Bring Arnold Vosloo and Oded Fehr back. Each of them has double the charisma Fraser could ever hope to have.

  1. Yuna/Julie Says:

I agree with you, Josh. The first two Mummy movies had their flaws (pt2 especially -- cheesiest lead death scene ever, that's all I'm saying), but they had a great, fun, entertaining story. Even some emotional bits to boot; I get goosebumps each time I see Anck-su-Namun regain her memories. It's so powerful.

The second really went overkill with CG, dampening the story a little. I think a Mummy 3, like X3: The Last Stand, would kill the franchise. (I hear they're making an X4, but story-wise, it's dead). Let Imhotep rest in peace.

But. If there is a Mummy 3, for Anubis sake, bring back Beni!

  1. Rachel Says:

I think the third movie would be great, but without Arnold Vosloo and Oded Fehr, it will suck.

  1. alyssa Says:

I think the first two movies were great and the third could be also if they give is an chance but if they don't like the script i think they should do something about it!!!

  1. shade Says:

Arnold is one of the sexiest mummies i have ever seen and with him I will not support the movie ever again !!! ( angry )

  1. Taylor Says:

without Rachel there is no mummy 3! she is one of the original cast mates she helps make the movie be as popular as it is without heeer i think this movie will tank.

  1. jade Says:

omg no i am not gonna watch it now that she is not in it she is the reason i even watche those movies cuz she is amazing!

  1. Sam Says:

They were all dead right, Ive seen this movie, and it is truly a pile of doggy doo....

Honestly it makes watching Stealth seem like fun, and the dialogue is honestly some of the most painful crap I have ever seen since I watched the Young and the Restless on TV!

The dialogue is likewise crap - not surprising at the script-writing only wrote Smallville..!

    And the acting...
    imagine watching pain dry...
    that would be more exciting..
even Frazer looks like he wishes he could wake up somewhere (anywhere!) else..!

Only the Chinese stars try to do the best with a bad script, but if you manage to make even Michelle Yeoh and Jet Li look boring, then I think the director and his script writers should all be put out to pasture...!!
