World Of Warcraft Movie Not Dead

By Josh Tyler: 2008-10-15 01:31:17
World Of Warcraft Movie Not Dead I still think it’s insane to try and make a movie out of a game with no actual plot structure, but the rumors of World of Warcraft’s impending transition to the world of feature film refuse to die. This time, they’re being spread by Mike Morhaime, president of World of Warcraft game maker Blizzard.

Moviehole caught up with Morhaime at this year’s Blizzcon, and put him to the question. Morhaime tells them that there are still plans to make a World of Warcraft film. In fact, it seems they’re more than just plans since he says, “the script is being written.” Unfortunately, he declined to say anything more. Apparently he’s signed a bad contract, the terms of which require him to be shot should he reveal specific details. Get that sucker reviewed by a lawyer next time Morhaime!

So World of Warcraft: The Movie, is still out there somewhere. Whether we’ll see it any time soon, is another question entirely. Or maybe the real question here is whether anyone would actually want to watch it. Isn’t the whole point in playing World of Warcraft to come up with your own story? Why pay to sit and watch someone else’s quest when you could be off on the internet, living in your own buxom elf-babe world?

  1. CRod Says:

no plot? you're kidding right? the warcraft lore is probably as extensive as any fantasy related story out there. what are you talking about?

  1. WoWFAN Says:

you obviously dont know anything about warcraft, the warcraft lore it has the BEST and biggest story and history in any fantasy game i've come across.

  1. Mac! Says:

LOL you just say what i was thinking, ya WoW is really extensive as LOTR "not that good" but you can easy make a serie of movies about almost any history on WoW and nobody will complain, "the real answer of who will want to watch it" is like saying i wont watch a movie about a book! because i can make my own world on my head, so yeah! we all whant to watch it "if hollywood dont screw up, like Uwe Boll movies"

  1. Elvyra Says:

    Agree with all comments.

The writer should actually do some research, but then, this is an opinion piece anyway right? World of Warcraft has a rich backstory and is chock full of lore. Also, he says that Mike Morhaime said that: "In fact, it seems they’re more than just plans since he says, “the script is being written.”"

This is not actually true, at least according to the Press Q&A I was at. What Mike said is that the first draft is complete, they are actually looking for a screenwriter to refine and a director to direct.

  1. VelvetGloves Says:

I think what Head Honcho Josh Tyler is saying is that World of Warcraft doesn't have a singular storyline. It is a collection of quests. While they may provide some linear direction, they aren't a true story. The lore is just that...lore. It is not a storyline. Granted, they are tapping the lore to enrich the quests and raids, but the game itself does not provide a clear cut story.

I spend more time than I like to admit playing World of Warcraft, but I can recognize that it may not be a great idea to make a movie out of it. I think the cut scenes and trailers Blizzard produces are great. I don't think they will be able to capture that and make a full length film out of it.

I hope Blizz proves me wrong.

  1. Wowler Says:

It´s a Warcraft-Movie, not a World of Warcraft-Movie! It´s a fine difference! So, the Writer has no plan about the whole thing...

  1. Wowler Says:

It´s a Warcraft movie, not a World of Warcraft movie! It´s a fine difference. So as you can see, the writer has no plan about it...

  1. The other guy Says:

As long a Uwe Boll doesn't come anywhere near this, I think we'll all be fine.

  1. Mia Says:

Do your research better. I play WoW for fun and rarely pay attention to the back story, but at least I'm smart enough to realize that there is one. Pick a side, Alliance or Horde. Then pick a race. Check them out on WoWwiki.com - they ALL have amazing history. Most, if not all, of the lore in the game is better than most fantasy movies that have been coming out of Hollywood in the last 2 decades. Making a deal with the devil for the prosperity of your race, a king being abducted and thought dead is suddenly found, a child brought up on hatred and violence becomes leader of an entire race and is viewed by most to be the primary leader of an entire faction. The "lack of plot" regarding Thrall or Varian Wrynn alone are better than a lot of crap Hollywood produces. In the very least, they're better than the tragedy Catwoman was, shredded pants and leather bikini top aside.

While I was commenting, I decided to check out the wiki page for this film:

    ___
As such, the movie is set one year before World of Warcraft and will primarily told from the Alliance's POV, though Metzen says his heart lies with the Horde. Characters such as Cairne Bloodhoof, Thrall and Bolvar Fordragon are likely to make appearances. Arthas is unlikely to appear. The main character is set to be a new hero described as a "kick-ass Human". Chris Metzen has stated that the new "kick-ass Human" character in the movie is not same one as in the comic (now known to be Varian Wrynn) Interestingly enough, the film is described as the "first film," raising obvious possibilities as to future installments.
    ___

    Next time do your research.

  1. Jesus Says:

Once again, and idiot that thinks this is a "World of Warcraft" movie. This is a Warcraft movie, you jackass. Blizzard has created extensive lore for the Warcraft series, released several Warcraft games before WoW, as well as several graphic novels/comics.

This guy is just another douchebag on the internet with an uneducated opinion. Please ignore him.

  1. Necrosice Says:

have you ever even read any of the 7 or so books packed with story and lore?

and it is NOT based on WoW, it is based on the Lore that WoW is based on.

  1. adriana Says:

Yeah it's not really possible to write an opinion based piece on something you know NOTHING about. There's so much lore to WoW and it's shown especially now with the release of Wotlk- but like a few people have stated- if you pay ANY attention to the situation it's a Warcraft movie. Which contains AMAZINGLY indepth storylines and wonderful ones at that. I don't even know half of the lore for the series and have been reading up on it all for a while.

And WoW does have lore, too, seeing as most of the Warcraft story takes place in WoW somehow or another. Though, again, with the release of Wotlk you'll see much easier the story from Warcraft III being thrown in.

And as far as people wanting to see the movie or not- I'm pretty damn sure the actual educated some odd MILLION players WORLDWIDE are just as excited as I to see this movie when it's released.
