12 Days Of Christmas: Elf

By Rafe Telsch: 2007-12-13 23:37:26
12 Days Of Christmas: Elf It’s time to celebrate the Christmas/ Chanukah/ Kwanza/ Festivus Holiday season, so here at Cinema Blend we’re enjoying Twelve Days of Christmas. Yes, we know traditionally the “12 days” start with Christmas, but we plan on being celebrated out by that time, so we’re pushing the twelve days leading up to the holiday.

Here at Cinema Blend, we’re celebrating by revisiting some of our favorite holiday movies. These aren’t the 12 best movies out there by any means, just twelve of our favorites. Some of them you might enjoy like we do. Others you might want to check out for the first time.

On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me…

Will Ferrell as a giant holiday Elf.

We kick off our twelve days with the most contemporary movie on our list, a film that was an instant holiday classic from the moment we first saw the trailer. Jon Favreau gets what makes a good holiday movie and puts it together in Elf, which follows Will Ferrell’s Buddy the Elf as he searches for his family and brings with him the real meaning of Christmas.

Ferrell may do some weird stuff in some of his movies, but here he is the overgrown child every one of us wishes we could be during the Holiday season. Here’s a grown man who believes in Santa (who would know better of the big guy’s existence than an elf) and knows what it’s like to keep Christmas alive all year round. Picking a single favorite moment is hard because almost every second Ferrell is on the screen is brilliant, from the subtle jokes about taxicabs and gum on rails to his fantastic duet of “Baby, it’s cold outside” with Zoey Deschanel, who really needs to put out a Christmas album all her own (we love her tracks on the Elf soundtrack).

That classic holiday moment… “The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear.” Try not to tear up as Deschanel kicks off “Santa Claus is coming to town.”
