201 Movies Listed

Is Shawshank Redemption the greatest movie of all time? The readers of Empire Magazine think so. They voted the men in prison movie as the best film ever in a recent Empire poll.

Next week, someone else will put out another poll and it’ll be some horrible Robin Williams movie on top. There aren’t many things more meaningless than lists like this. Despite their irrelevancy, people love the heck out of lists. So here’s the rest of what made it to the top on Empire’s.

Shawshank took number one with Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring taking two and three respectively. Another Star Wars movie filled the fourth spot while The Godfather and Pulp Fiction took numbers five and six. Empire readers have pretty good tastes in movies.

Of course what continues to make Shawhank’s current popularity interesting is that no one really paid much attention to it when it first hit theaters. If you know anyone who claims to have seen it in theaters, there’s a good chance they’re lying. It was saved from obscurity by after the fact interest on DVD.

Empire’s list contains what they think are the 201 best movies of all time. If you’re into useless listing, you’ll have to pick up their print magazine to read about the rest of them.
