Django Unchained
Picture, Supporting Actor, Original Screenplay, Cinematography, Sound Editing
Given how Quentin Tarantino’s work celebrates cinematic violence one would think it would be ignored by the Academy on a regular basis, but it’s never true; case in point the top category nominations for his latest, Django Unchained. The fourth of the writer/director’s films to be up for Hollywood’s highest honors, the impressive, bloody slave revenge thriller is unlike anything else up for awards this year but deserves to be right in the spot where it is. Sadly Tarantino’s movies have never been able to take home more than one prize per year at the annual ceremony – the director and Roger Avery taking home Best Original Screenplay for Pulp Fiction and Christoph Waltz winning for his performance in Inglourious Basterds - but perhaps this year will change that.

Beasts of the Southern Wild
Picture, Director, Actress, Adapted Screenplay
Winner of the Best U.S. Dramatic Feature and Best Cinematography prizes at Sundance, Beasts has been the little indie that could all year, earning rapturous reviews from many critics who were blown away by the talent shown among this group of virtually unknown filmmakers. One of the most inventive and unusual films in the entire Best Picture lineup, Beasts is highly unlikely to win any Oscars, but this is one of those cases where the nomination is definitely its own honor-- and the surprise nomination for Benh Zeitlin as Best Director is proof that the Academy feels as passionately about this film as those Sundance audiences did.
