It’s not much but it’s enough to get any girl pumped for Whip It. For her directorial debut Drew Barrymore chose to bring Shauna Cross’ novel Derby Girl to life. Hold on tight because by the look of the bruise Barrymore shows off in this featurette, Whip It is going to be one heck of a ride.

Barrymore is taking girl power to the max when she tells the story of Bliss Cavendar (Ellen Page), a teenage girl who defies her strict mother’s rules and joins a roller derby team. Seeing girls kick the crap out of each other isn’t the only thing going on in this film. Barrymore addresses the importance of including some sentimentality, humor and a good soundtrack in addition to the action.

Simply put, Derby Girl is a fun story and really has potential to translate on screen. Hopefully Barrymore didn’t get too carried away with having a blast making this film and does Cross’ book some justice. Take a look at the featurette over at Apple to watch it in HD.
