A Pirate's Dream: Oscar Nom Viewing And Voting May Take Place Online![]()
There’s been a lot of hoohaw surrounding the Oscars the past few years, first with them moving the date over and over again, and then changing the best picture category from five movies up to ten. Now it seems like the Academy might be making a few more changes, though these will affect us commoners less.
According to THR, AMPAS honchos are playing with the idea of setting up an online server for members of the Academy to watch the nominees and vote for which films they think should take home the little gold men. This not only would help speed up the process of voting, but it will also cut the cost for studios as they will no longer have to send copies of their films out to the thousands of Academy members. The one downfall to this is that putting films on the internet will surely draw the attention of hackers and pirates the world over. Oscar season means one thing to them...screeners. And with all the screeners readily available on an online server, pirates will no longer have to hope for a rip to appear online, they’ll simply have to wait for someone to hack the password to the Oscar server and pull the files directly. Not to mention that if someone gets a hold of a username and password, hackers may be able to affect the voting. Online viewing and voting for the Oscars is a great idea on paper. It would certainly mean that fewer movies would be forgotten about or passed over by studios for their Oscar push (ahem...I’m looking at you, Sony. Moon deserved some promotion). But unless the programmers can put a Great Wall Of China around their website, hackers are going to have a field day with it. |
