If there’s one way to turn around my feelings about a movie, it’s to add Aaron Sorkin to the bill. The Social Network sounded like it would be idiotic, but add Aaron Sorkin to the mix and it becomes a smart, edgy thriller. Now the long-time screenwriter is proving his power again by stepping in to make his directorial debut with a movie chronicling the political career of John Edwards, according to THR.

Based on Andrew Young's book The Politician: An Insider’s Account Of John Edwards’s Pursuit of the Presidency and the Scandal That Brought Him Down, the story will tell just that. Sorkin will be going for the triple crown on the piece as he’ll be directing and also writing and producing. He had this to say about the project:

"This is a first-hand account of an extraordinary story filled with motivations, decisions and consequences that would have lit Shakespeare up. There's much more to Andrew's book than what has been reported, and I'm grateful that he's trusting me with it."

Edwards, of course, is the former vice-presidental nominee and Presidential hopeful whose personal life exploded when it was revealed that not only was he carrying on an affair while his wife battled cancer, but he'd had a love child with the mistress. He'd made a name for himself as a crusader for the poor and as a down-home charmer, but now his name is more more synonymous with "sleazeball" or plenty of other choice insults. It goes without saying that this story would make a great movie.

What’s funny is that during Sorkin’s guest appearance on Entourage last season he made it pretty clear that he wanted nothing to do with directing, and now here his making his debut. Maybe he was trying to throw us off the scent.

There are no other details about the film available just yet, but as soon as we hear more we’ll keep you updated.
