Aaron Sorkin v. The Bush Administration![]()
Aaron Sorkin's great skill as a writer-- translating liberal goody-two-shoes outrage into compelling drama-- was well-used on The West Wing and not so much on Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. But now George Clooney, a liberal goody-two-shoes full of his own kind of suave outrage, has found a good use for Sorkin. He's hired the former TV whiz kid to write The Challenge, a courtroom drama about the real trial for Osama bin Laden's former driver, who was held at Guantanamo for over five years.
Clooney's Smokehouse production company is developing it, and Variety says that Clooney plans to direct and maybe even star as Navy lawyer Charles Swift, who worked to help ensure a fair trial for the drama. Swift and Georgetown law professor Neal Katyal tried to sue the President because they felt the Constitution had been violated by the existence of Guantanamo. Something tells me this is only the beginnings of movies made about Bush administration scandals that were covered up while the guy was still in office. Happily, this one has a pretty good chance at being great, given Clooney's previous skills as a director and Sorkin's understanding of the real human consequences of politics and government. |
