Steve Carell has been busy taking on new projects since he wrapped up shooting The Office earlier this spring, but by far the hardest to understand is Seeking A Friend At The End Of The World, a romantic comedy about what happens when Carell and Keira Knightley fall for each other despite, or maybe because of, the fact that there's an asteroid coming to destroy the earth. Of course it has all kinds of potential to be great, given Carell and Knightley's talents and the irresistible end-of-the-world premise, but it's also impossible to know how they'll pull off such an unlikely romance.

However they plan to do it, they've at least brought in some co-stars to help make it possible. Variety reports that former CSI star William Peterson has joined the cast, as have Adam Brody and Rob Corddry. It's unclear how any of them will fit into the main plot, which finds Knightley joining her neighbor Carell on his road trip mission to reconnect with a high school sweetheart before the world implodes. Corddry especially seems like a wild card, known primarily for comedies like Cedar Rapids and the Cartoon Network series Children's Hospital ,though that series is probably how he got the job-- Lorene Scafaria, who's making his directorial debut with this film, also wrote for the show.

Having a newbie handle such potential tricky subject matter seems like another challenge that Seeking a Friend would have to get over, but I'm putting faith in Scafaria solely because of her only other feature writing credit, the far better-than-average teen romance that more people need to see. Who knows if any of that film's vibe will translate to Seeking a Friend, but it's pretty much all we have to go on at this point, so why not assume the best.
