Adam McKay Wanted To Make Wall-E

By Katey Rich: 2008-07-21 18:35:56
Adam McKay Wanted To Make Wall-E At this point it seems like we know what Adam McKay is good at—directing silly, irreverent comedies, most of them starring Will Ferrell, that make us all laugh hysterically. But it seems McKay had plans to make something totally different—that is, until an adorable robot got in his way.

”Honestly I went and saw Wall-E, and I was bummed out.” McKay is probably the first person in the world to say that, but he has good reason. “I was like, ‘Aw, shit. That’s really good.’ They kind of covered some of the area I was going to play around with.” McKay was planning what he calls a Brazil-type comedy, with some of the same elements as Wall-E-- specifically the people on the spaceship with the TV screens, floating around in hoverchairs.

But don’t worry, McKay fans; he’s not giving up on making a movie that seems a million miles away from the style of something like Step Brothers, his upcoming comedy. ”I still might do it. I might modify it, and try and get it to work.” And he’s got even more plans besides that one. “I might do one in that Sin City/300 [style]. I love that style, half-practical, half-animated. I just think the possibilities for that are endless. I wanted to try and do not film noir, not action, kind of explosive science fiction.”

Well, you heard it here. Adam McKay, the man who gave us Ron Burgundy and Ricky Bobby, wants to make a whole new genre, possibly giving us our first chance to see Will Ferrell blow up some animated characters. And he promises he’s not done with Ferrell, or his Step Brothers co-star, just yet. “I like the idea of these guys chain smoking and drinking and doing like 8 films together and ending up in Vegas. That’s the career arc I want for them.”
