Adam Shankman Talks Oscar Hosts, Trying To Hire Tina Fey

Adam Shankman Talks Oscar Hosts, Trying To Hire Tina Fey Amid the flurry of rumors about Oscar hosts yesterday, and the actual announcement that Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin had gotten the job, Entertainment Weekly actually got on the phone with Oscars producer Adam Shankman to talk about the madness. While there's an awkward moment near the end about the fact that Martin and Baldwin are both white males, causing Shankman to claim "There’s been a constant theme in my work to be against racism," it's mostly an enlightening, somewhat surprising interviewing.

Most surprising of all? They really did want Tina Fey to host it, and Baldwin might have been a second choice to be paired with Martin. Shankman explains, "It wasn’t that she turned us down but her work schedule right in that time, she’s writing the last of her shows, and we realized then that it wouldn’t work. But they were so great on the show together (the Oscars last year) and he’d done 30 Rock. Once again there were lots of discussions in there."

And even though Shankman is best known for directing the musical Hairspray, he might not force Martin to play the banjo and Baldwin to tap dance. "There had been a lot of speculation surrounding the hiring of me as a signal that there might be more of the song/dance. But I don’t want musical numbers unless there’s an organic fit into the show."

Shankman actually seems to have a good head on his shoulders about this whole thing, and a level of self-awareness-- he said he wanted to let the Academy know he wasn't trying to make the MTV Movie Awards-- that the Oscars can always use. Read the whole interview and see if you find the same faith in Shankman that I did.
