It’s funny, Ben Affleck played Hollywood-rejected actor George Reeves in Hollywoodland, and now he’s on the verge of becoming him. George Reeves couldn’t get work because everyone identified him with Superman, and Affleck gets laughed out of meetings because he’s still got Bennifer stink all over him. It doesn’t exactly suck to be Ben Affleck, but if you’re Affleck you probably wish you were Matt Damon.
Affleck’s frustration with his current public profile is starting to show through the cracks. He’s made a few comments recently which have hinted that he misses the days before he became a tabloid centerfold, but now he seems to be laying it all out on the table in an interview with Parade Magazine. “You get rejected and
rejected and rejected, and it requires such energy just to stick with it,” he opines. “Behavior in Hollywood runs the gamut from wild egomania to desperate insecurity. They go hand-in-hand, like balms for each other. It’s a teeter-totter that’s tough to ride. You feel like an imposter, vaguely uncomfortable in your own skin—which is how I usually feel.”
The great thing, is that he’s just saying what we’ve all been thinking for years now. Pre-JLo Affleck was pretty well liked. Alright, maybe a little wooden as an actor, but a lovable guy on screen. Post-JLo, Ben says, “In about six months, I lost myself and turned into a guy who, in retrospect, I don’t like very much. I put myself in that position. I wish that weren’t the truth, but it is.” Talking about his experiences in Hollywood, Affleck adds: “I was tired of being lied about and taken advantage of. I was really disgusted.”
That might explain why the days of Affleck starring in vapid, awful movies seem to be, for the most part, over. He hasn’t done anything that really sucked since 2004’s Surving Christmas. Instead he’s slowed down to doing less and doing smart indie projects like Hollywoodland. He’s also gotten out of the spotlight and into directing. Next weekend his second directorial effort Gone Baby Gone hits theaters and early reviews say it’s good. Remember Ben Affleck, that likeable, straight-shooting guy who Matt Damon let help write Good Will Hunting? Maybe he’s back.
