Aja Enters A Black Hole

Aja Enters A Black Hole Even though V for Vendetta hasn’t even hit theaters, writers keep lining up graphic novels for movie adaptations. Sadly, this isn’t a story about the much demanded “Watchmen” or “Dark Knight Returns” film adaptations, but rather Charles Burns’ “Black Hole”. Haven’t heard of it? Neither have I but, according to Hollywood Reporter, the twelve issue comic was listed by Entertainment Weekly in their top ten pieces of fiction for the year.

The story, which focuses on a teenage “bug” that infects two teenagers causing mutations, is being adapted for the screen by Roger Avary and Neil Gaiman for Paramount Pictures and MTV Films. Avary and Gaiman’s names are almost enough to counter that MTV Films label and make me interested in this, except for the name slated to direct. “Black Hole” will be under the direction of Alexandre Aja (Haute Tension, The Hills Have Eyes).

I’m not passing judgement on Aja’s remake of Wes Craven’s Hills until I see it, but Haute Tension was a terrible film, although I’ll admit most of my issues with it were from the story which cashed in logic for a cheap surprise ending. However, the movie was visually impressive, if not disturbing. With someone else writing Aja’s next film, there is the possibility that it could be good, although the surreal plot sounds like it would be better handled by someone like Darren Aronofsky, especially considering everything Aja has done so far has been straight horror, while “Black Hole” sounds like it has more dramatic elements to it. Hopefully, with Gaiman and Avary’s script, Aja can take a chance and prove what he can really do as a director.
