Alec Baldwin is the kind of guy whose name you love to see in the credits of, well, anything. Recently his role on 30 Rock (where he plays a successful capitalist businessman who hates wussy liberals and loves expensive suits) has cast him in a new comedic light. Sure, we always knew he was funny, but we never thought he was that funny. But apparently none of this success as an actor is good enough for him.
According to THR, Alec Baldwin plans to quit acting when he’s done with 30 Rock. The actor of great films like The Departed and The Hunt for Red October feels as though his career has been a terribly unsuccessful one. “The goal of movie-making is to star in a film where your performance drives the film, and the film is either a soaring critical or commercial success, and I never had that," Baldwin stated. Initially this statement sounds a bit egomaniacal, but consider performances like Mickey Rourke in The Wrestler or Robert De Niro in Raging Bull. While these actors benefitted from great writing and direction, the films’ foundations were their performances. That’s all Alec wants and he feels he hasn’t been able to pull it off. Then again, these kind of grandiose promises are rarely kept. It’s likely that Baldwin will forget that he even said it come 2012 (his planned departure year). But if he does hold true to his words, he’ll be missed. Hollywood doesn’t see actors of his ilk very often anymore. No matter what role he plays, Alec always brings something great to the table.
